The Material

Natural talent with an affinity for water

The Material

Renewable – natural … and yet not wood. In fact, birch bark combines the best of wood, stone and textiles for many areas of application.

After all, the characteristic difference between birch bark and wood is how they deal with moisture and humidity. The natural function of the bark is to protect the birch from rain. This is why the material does not swell when it meets water. At the same time, it is velvety-soft and three-dimensionally malleable.

Unique combination of natural properties

Benefits

  • Look

timeless – distinctive – inviting

Surfaces made of Nordic birch bark look luxurious and modern at the same time thanks to their pleasant appearance and warm forest hues. They naturally create the ideal balance between style and func – tionality. And their appeal is here to stay: nevi betula surfaces have a robust surface structure and develop an attractive patina over time.

  • Touch

velvety – warm – soft

The texture and feel of birch bark create a tangible connection to nature. The surface material invites you to relax and enjoy. The insulating properties of its natural fibres promote an energy-efficient, healthy indoor climate. Furthermore, it is anti – microbial, has a pH value similar to that of human skin and feels velvety and warm.

  • Performance

waterproof – non-slip – malleable

Our 3D-shapeable material unleashes its full potential when it comes into contact with water. Unlike wood, birch bark does not swell, which makes it ideal for direct contact with water and perfect for designing bathrooms or yacht interiors. The material can also compete with ceramic tiles, as the superior grip of birch bark prevents slipping on damp surfaces.

Craftsmanship and precision

Refinement

In a complex manual process, the birch is harvested on-site in the forest without destroying the tree’s cambium — because this layer is the prerequisite for further growth of the tree. Harvesting bark by hand is gentle and is done without heavy equipment that could compact the soil. Without the need to create logging roads, the forest ecosystem is preserved.

  • Up to 150 layers of birch bark form the basis for the surfaces.
  • Compressed under high pressure, they are turned into a block that reveals the typical linear structure of betula veneers when sliced.
  • Each nevi betula surface is one of a kind and has a unique character. The direction of growth and grain are determined by the life of each tree, so no two are alike.

From the harvest to the finished product

Sustainability

From the very beginning, starting with harvesting from the tree, nevi focuses on sustainability. Each subsequent step is also implemented with the responsible use of natural resources in mind:

  • shorter overland transport routes
  • ecological development and production according to high quality standards locally in Germany
  • As a sustainable plastic alternative, nevi betula surfaces reduce the burden on the oceans
  • The natural product contributes to the preservation of natural forests
